The English Language Arts program at Westbrook is committed to providing students with the support they need to fully participate in the rich English learning environment we strive daily to create. All support has the ultimate goal of helping students improve their English proficiency to use academic language confidently in the areas of vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Westbrook follows the Chinese State Curriculum and supports the English programme with Cambridge Reading Adventures, Cambridge YLE exams and differentiated instruction using the Daily 5 literacy programme.
6 Before 7
Our aim to deliver 6000 English words to students before grade 7 opens a world of opportunity not limited to State exams, international exams, travel, work and culture.
The key components to opening the world of language to students is to give them real world experience. Starbucks, KFC, police, fire or tourist attractions can be visited in English.
Using levelled readers, songs, films and art in addition to the State Curriculum and popular competitions extends student vocabulary exponentially.
Cambridge Reading Adventures
Becoming a good reader means having access to high quality materials that support the development of a self-extending system. Our literacy program features 300 titles accompanied by a wide range of activities that support learning, including:
Reading aloud to help children understand structure, expression, expand their vocabulary, and learn new ways of using language
Independent reading to help them become self-sufficient, get more practice, and choose books for themselves
Guided reading, which involves a carefully designed program of support to help readers expand their skills and strategies
A key factor is giving students just the right level of support and challenge. When books are matched to readers, the young reader can continue the successful processing that builds the system.
Students select from five authentic reading and writing choices, working independently toward personalized goals, while the teacher meets individual needs through whole-group and small-group instruction, as well as one-on-one conferring.
These choices include
- Read to Self
- Work on Writing
- Read to Someone,
- Listen to Reading
- Word Work
Westbrook’s co-curricular activities are led by school staff. The programme is fun, engaging and educational, and students are highly encouraged to be involved. The after school programme is between 4:40 PM and 5:20 PM when students have dinner or travel home.
